Hoag.

Overview

Project Type: Healthcare Website Redesign at Scale

My Role: UX Lead – IA Overhaul, Wireframes, Template Library

Platform: Responsive Web & Mobile, Wordpress

Timeline: ~4 months

Team: Art Director, PM, Engineer, Client Stakeholders

Outcome: Reorganized 10K+ pages, improved patient navigation, and supported specialty clinics with reusable content templates.

The Challenge

Hoag’s website had over 10,000 pages, making it difficult for patients to find doctors and services while also creating inconsistencies in how Hoag’s institutes were represented. The challenge was to streamline navigation, improve content discoverability, and create a scalable design system that worked across all service lines.

Understanding the Users

The redesign needed to serve two key audiences:

  • Patients looking for healthcare providers, treatment options, and general hospital services.

  • Hoag’s institutes needing a structured way to highlight their specialties, research, and offerings.

Prioritizing Content

We prioritized information architecture and site navigation, ensuring content was easy to find. The site map overhaul was the foundation, followed by the creation of reusable page templates to provide consistency while allowing flexibility for different institute needs.

The Solution

  • Navigation Overhaul & Site Map Redesign – Simplified the structure, reducing friction and making key services easier to access.

  • 20 Reusable Templates – Created modular page layouts for different content types, ensuring consistency while allowing for customization.

  • Homepage Redesign – Developed a cleaner, more engaging homepage experience.

  • Mobile-First Approach – Designed all templates with responsiveness in mind for seamless usability across devices.

  • User Testing & SME Collaboration – Conducted usability testing and worked closely with subject matter experts to align content with real user needs.

The Results & Next Steps

The redesigned site simplified navigation, improved accessibility, and created a scalable content system that better served both patients and Hoag’s institutes. Moving forward, the focus will be on enhancing search functionality and refining content layouts based on ongoing user feedback to continuously improve the experience.
